All-terrain helmet for protected riding anywhere

An all-terrain helmet is not just an accessory to add to your cart. On an electric mountain bike or a high-performance scooter, it protects the area most difficult to replace: your head. Damaged sidewalks, gravel paths, roots, fast descents, or emergency braking—mixed terrains demand equipment designed for impacts and stability, not just style.

The right model depends on your vehicle, your usual speed, and the type of rides you actually do. An urban commute with shortcuts on trails doesn't impose the same needs as an electric mountain biking session on technical trails. Here's how to choose without paying for unnecessary features or riding with insufficient protection.

Why choose an all-terrain helmet?

The classic urban helmet is often light and discreet. It is suitable for calm rides on regular surfaces but can show its limitations when the terrain becomes rougher. An all-terrain helmet generally covers more of the back of the skull and the temples. This additional coverage is useful when a fall is not solely forward.

Mountain bike specific models are also designed to better manage ventilation during sustained effort. Uphill, electric assistance helps, but it doesn't eliminate heat, especially on long rides or under the American sun. Wide ventilation channels evacuate hot air while allowing sufficient airflow at low speeds.

The visor is another concrete advantage. It limits glare and protects against projections of dirt, dust, or small stones. On an electric scooter used between city and trails, it can also improve comfort against a low sun. However, it does not replace glasses when dust, insects, or branches are frequent.

Open-face, full-face, or modular helmet: what level of protection?

The choice begins with the helmet's shape. An open-face MTB type model is the most versatile. It keeps the face clear, remains well-ventilated, and is suitable for daily commutes, gravel rides, and rolling trails. For most electric bike users, it's the simplest compromise.

The full-face helmet adds a chin bar and protects the jaw. It becomes relevant for committed descents, technical trails, aggressive electric mountain biking, or powerful scooters used off-road. Its drawback is clear: it is warmer, bulkier, and sometimes less pleasant for slow urban travel. A full-face helmet is not automatically the best purchase if 90% of your journeys are on flat roads.

The modular helmet targets riders who alternate between casual rides and more challenging sections. Its removable chin bar allows adjusting the level of protection. This is an interesting solution, provided the fastening system is reliable and you actually use both configurations. Otherwise, a good open-face helmet or a true full-face helmet will often be more consistent with your budget.

The criteria that make a difference

Size and fit first and foremost

A high-performance helmet that doesn't fit properly offers less protection. Measure your head circumference with a tape measure, about 2 cm above your eyebrows and ears, then compare this measurement to the manufacturer's size guide. Don't choose a size based solely on S, M, or L: cuts differ from one brand to another.

Once the helmet is on, it should be horizontal, just above the eyebrows. Tighten the rear dial until you achieve a firm fit, without pressure points. Gently shake your head: the helmet should follow your movements without sliding on your forehead or moving up towards your neck. The chin strap should be adjusted, with about one finger's thickness between the strap and your chin.

Removable padding is useful for hygiene and fine adjustments. If you ride regularly in a hot or humid climate, being able to wash them prevents the helmet from becoming uncomfortable after a few weeks.

Protection standards and technologies

Check that the helmet meets a recognized safety standard for your use. In the United States, requirements and recommendations may vary by state, city, rider age, and vehicle type. For an electric bike, look for a cycling helmet certification. For a fast scooter or more aggressive off-road use, the level of protection must correspond to the actual intensity of your practice.

Some designs incorporate a slip layer or technology designed to reduce rotational forces transmitted to the brain during an oblique impact. This is not a promise of invulnerability, but it is a relevant criterion if you ride fast, often, or on uneven ground.

Also look at the construction of the shell and the absorbent foam. After a significant impact, even without obvious cracks, a helmet may have absorbed some of the energy and no longer offer the same level of safety. It must then be replaced. A helmet is never a part to be repaired with glue, tape, or a re-glued shell.

Ventilation, weight, and compatibility

A very protective helmet that you leave in the trunk because it bothers you is useless. Weight and balance are particularly important over long distances. Try to opt for a stable model, with evenly distributed weight that doesn't pull your neck backward.

Ventilation also depends on your environment. In Florida, Texas, or Southern California, large vents will be a real advantage. In a cold or windy area, a less open helmet might be more pleasant, but you can always add a thin balaclava suitable for cycling.

If you wear glasses, check that the helmet's shape doesn't pinch the arms and that the visor offers enough space. For scooter users, also consider camera mounts, lighting, or reflective elements only if they do not compromise the helmet's structure. Never drill the shell to add an accessory.

Adapting your helmet to the terrain and vehicle

On an urban electric bike with a few park roads or compacted trails, a well-ventilated open-face MTB helmet is generally sufficient. It provides better coverage than a city model while remaining comfortable for daily use. Add reliable lighting to the bike and visible elements to your clothing: being seen complements protection but does not replace it.
