How to change a scooter inner tube

A flat tire doesn't have to put your journey on hold. Knowing how to change a scooter inner tube will get you back on the road quickly, limit workshop costs, and keep your machine reliable day-to-day. The key is not to force the tire: you need to identify the correct size, protect the valve, and reassemble it methodically.
Before changing your scooter's inner tube
Start by checking that the puncture is indeed in the inner tube. An under-inflated tire, a loose valve, or a damaged rim can produce similar symptoms. Inflate the tire slightly and listen: a hiss, a rapid pressure loss, or a leaky valve usually confirm the diagnosis.
Next, locate the markings on the tire sidewall. The most common sizes are 8.5 x 2 inches, 10 x 2 inches, 10 x 2.125 inches, or 10 x 2.5 inches. These numbers are not interchangeable. An inner tube that is too small will stretch, wear prematurely, and can burst. A tube that is too large will form creases and risk being pinched during installation.
Size is not always enough. Also check the valve type: straight valve, 45-degree angled valve, or 90-degree angled valve. On many electric scooters, especially when the rim leaves little space, an angled valve is essential to connect the pump without difficulty. On a model with a motor in the wheel, also check the motor cable routing before disassembling anything.
To work properly, you will need a compatible inner tube, a pump with a pressure gauge, two or three strong tire levers, a wrench suitable for the wheel nuts, and gloves. A little soapy water can help the tire bead slide, but avoid greasy products: they can encourage the tire to rotate on the rim.
Removing the wheel without damaging the scooter
Turn off the scooter, unplug the charger, and place it on a stable surface. If you are working on the front wheel, rest the handlebars on a protective surface to avoid scratching the screen or grips. For the rear wheel, a stand or a sturdy box can keep the deck elevated.
On a classic wheel, loosen the axle nuts, then remove the washers, remembering their order. Take a photo before disassembly: this is a simple precaution that avoids hesitation during reassembly. If a disc brake caliper blocks the wheel's removal, it may be necessary to loosen it slightly. Never press the brake lever when the disc is removed, especially with a hydraulic brake.
The motor wheel case requires more attention. Locate the motor cable connector and unplug it without pulling on the wires. Some harnesses are held by clips or pass through a narrow sleeve. Work calmly: a cut or pinched cable transforms a simple puncture into a more expensive electrical repair.
Once the wheel is removed, take off the valve cap, then unscrew the valve core if you have the appropriate tool. Let all the air out. A tire still under pressure is much harder to open, and tire levers can slip on the rim.
Removing the old inner tube
Press all around the tire to dislodge its two beads from the rim. This step is very useful for rigid 8.5 or 10-inch tires. Then, insert a first tire lever under the bead, opposite the valve, and hook it to a spoke if the rim allows. Place the second tire lever a few inches further along and proceed gradually.
Do not use a screwdriver. It can mark the rim, cut the tire, or puncture the new inner tube. If the tire resists, bring its bead towards the central well of the rim: that's where you gain the necessary play, not by forcing the lever harder.
Once one side of the tire is off, remove the inner tube. Start by pushing the valve inwards, then gently pull it through the rim hole. Keep the old inner tube for a few minutes: it can help you confirm the valve length and the exact format to order.
Before installing the new part, inspect the inside of the tire with your fingers, slowly and carefully. Look for a piece of glass, a thorn, a staple, or a metal point. Also check the rim strip: if it is displaced, cut, or missing, the spoke nipples or drilling edges can attack the inner tube. Removing only the punctured tube without eliminating the cause often leads to a second puncture within the first few kilometers.
How to change a scooter inner tube step by step
Inflate the new inner tube very slightly. It should take a soft, round shape without being firm. This small amount of air prevents it from twisting inside the tire and makes valve placement easier.
First, insert the valve into its hole. It should go in straight, without excessive angle. Screw the valve nut only a few turns if your tube has one: tightening it completely can prevent the valve from moving slightly and promote its tearing during an impact or hard braking.
Then place the entire inner tube inside the tire. Check that it is neither twisted nor caught under a bead. Put the first side of the tire back on if you had removed it completely, then start putting the second side back on by hand. Work on both sides of the wheel rather than finishing one side at once.
Towards the end, the last few inches are the tightest. Keep the already mounted part in the rim's well and use a tire lever with restraint. Before the last pass, push the inner tube inwards with your thumb. This action reduces the risk of pinching between the bead and the rim.
Once the tire is in place, go around the wheel several times, pressing its sidewalls. Check if any part of the inner tube is protruding. Then inflate to half pressure, and check that the tire is evenly seated on each side. The molded reference line on the sidewall should remain at a regular distance from the rim.
Inflation, reassembly, and safety check
Respect the pressure recommended by the manufacturer, indicated on the tire or in the scooter manual. On 10-inch tires, a range of around 36 to 50 PSI, or about 2.5 to 3.5 bar, is common, but the correct pressure depends on the tire, your weight, the load, and the type of journey. Don't automatically inflate to the maximum: excessive pressure reduces comfort and can decrease grip on rough roads. Too little pressure, conversely, greatly increases the risk of pinching the tube.
Reassemble the wheel, observing the order of the washers and spacers. On a motorized wheel, ensure the cable follows its original path, without tension and away from the disc or moving parts. Tighten the nuts firmly and evenly. Replace the brake caliper if you moved it, then spin the wheel by hand: it should turn freely, without constant rubbing.
Test the brake before riding. Then do a short test ride at low speed, near your home, and check the pressure again after a few minutes. A rapid pressure drop indicates either a pinch during assembly or a foreign object still present in the tire.
Avoiding the next puncture
The best protection remains regularly checked pressure. Check it at least once a week if you ride daily, and before a long journey. Potholes, curbs, and debris-covered roads are particularly aggressive for small wheels.
A worn, cracked, or too smooth tire also deserves to be replaced at the same time as the inner tube. Changing only the tube on a tired tire is cheaper in the short term, but this choice increases the risk of a new puncture and reduces road holding.
