How to choose scooter brake pads

A squealing brake, a soft lever, or an extended stopping distance are not minor inconveniences. On an electric scooter, especially in the city or on a powerful model, these are signals that need to be addressed quickly. Knowing how to choose scooter brake pads helps avoid incompatible purchases, protects the disc, and restores consistent braking for daily use.

The right approach is not to choose a pad simply because it looks like the old one or because it's advertised for a known brand. The shape, caliper type, friction material, and your usage make all the difference. A scooter used for commuting does not place the same demands as a KuKirin G3 Pro, a Dualtron, or a machine used on trails and steep inclines.

How to Choose Scooter Brake Pads Based on Your Model

Mechanical compatibility is paramount. A pad must exactly match your brake caliper, not just the disc diameter. Two pads might have similar friction material but differ by a few millimeters in the mounting tabs, central notch, or thickness. They will then not mount correctly.

Start by identifying the precise model of your scooter, its year if it comes in multiple versions, and then the affected location: front brake, rear brake, or both. Some scooters use the same part number for both wheels. Others use different calipers, especially when combining a mechanical cable brake and a hydraulic brake.

The most reliable method is to remove an old pad and compare its silhouette, width, height, and the position of the spring. A clear photo of the pad laid flat, with the caliper or engraved reference visible, greatly reduces the risk of error. If your vehicle is equipped with a common system, look for explicit compatibility announced for the model concerned, such as Segway Max G2, KuKirin G2, KuKirin G4 Pro, Dualtron, or Minimotors.

Do not confuse pads with brake shoes. Brake shoes press against the rim on some bicycles. Pads, on the other hand, grip a metal disc using a caliper. A scooter with a drum brake or electronic brake does not necessarily have replaceable pads in the same way.

Mechanical or Hydraulic Brake: An Essential Check

A mechanical caliper is operated by a cable. It is simple to adjust but often requires regular adjustment as the pads wear. A hydraulic caliper works with a fluid circuit and generally offers more power and modulation. Its pads are not automatically specific to the hydraulic system, but the caliper reference remains crucial.

Look directly at the brand and model inscribed on the caliper when possible. Systems like Shimano, Zoom, Nutt, or proprietary calipers may use different shapes. When in doubt, never force a pad into its housing: it must slide freely before the axle or pin is reinserted.

Choosing the Right Pad Material

Once the shape is validated, the material must match your terrain, your expected braking power, and your tolerance for noise. There is no single perfect material for everyone. The best choice is one that remains consistent in your real riding conditions.

Organic Pads: Comfort and Quiet in the City

Organic pads, also known as resin pads, use a mixture of fibers and resins. They often provide a gentle initial bite, easy-to-modulate braking, and quieter operation. They are well-suited for urban scooters used on dry roads, bike paths, and regular commutes at moderate speeds.

The downside is faster wear during long descents, when the scooter is heavy, or when the rider brakes hard and often. They also tolerate high temperatures less well. If you ride in the rain or regularly carry a loaded bag, their lifespan may be shorter.

Sintered Metallic Pads: Endurance and Power

Sintered metallic pads are composed of compacted metallic particles. They are suitable for users who heavily rely on their brakes: hilly routes, frequent rain, fast scooters, high total weight, or off-road use. They resist heat better and maintain more stable performance when the disc heats up.

However, they can be noisier, especially when starting or in wet weather. Their bite can also feel more direct. On some light or already marked discs, they accelerate wear compared to organic pads. They are an excellent choice for endurance, but not necessarily for the quietest possible braking.

Semi-Metallic Pads: The Useful Compromise

Semi-metallic pads blend organic and metallic components. They often offer a balanced choice for mixed urban, trail, and recreational use. They provide more resistance than organic pads, generally with less noise and a less harsh feel than a fully sintered model.

For many riders, this is the simplest solution if their commutes alternate between urban streets, wet surfaces, and some hills. Nevertheless, check the caliper or disc manufacturer's recommendations: some discs clearly indicate the recommended pad type.

The Disc Matters as Much as the Pads

Installing new pads on a worn, warped, or contaminated disc does not solve the problem. Examine the disc before ordering. If it is deeply scratched, blued by overheating, very thin, or deformed, replacement is often necessary. A warped disc causes cyclical rubbing and gives the impression that the pads are poorly adjusted.

Also check its diameter. Sizes like 120 mm, 140 mm, 160 mm, and 180 mm are found depending on the scooters. The diameter does not identify the shape of the pads, but it indicates the expected braking level and parts availability. A larger disc dissipates heat better, provided the fork, swingarm, and caliper are designed for this configuration.

A greasy disc or one contaminated with lubricant can render new pads ineffective. Clean it with a suitable brake cleaner and a clean cloth, then avoid touching the braking surface with greasy fingers. If the old pads have absorbed oil, replacing them is generally safer than trying to salvage them.

When to Replace Your Brake Pads?

There is no universal mileage. Wear depends on the rider's weight and load, terrain, weather, scooter power, and braking habits. A daily commute with a long descent wears pads much faster than a flat route of the same distance.

Inspect the friction material regularly. When it becomes very thin, around 1 mm, it's time to act. Don't wait until the metal backing plate touches the disc: you risk scratching the rotor, losing braking performance, and having to replace multiple parts instead of just one.

The following symptoms warrant an immediate check: metallic noise, lever almost hitting the handlebar, inconsistent braking, lever vibration, hot smell, or a sharp drop in power. A whistle alone doesn't always require replacement, as humidity and dust can cause it. But if it persists after cleaning and bedding in, check the condition of the disc and pads.

Installation and Bedding In: The Final Step That Changes Everything

After installation, do not immediately head for a fast descent. Pump the lever several times to bring the pads closer to the disc. Check that the wheel spins without significant rubbing and that the caliper fixings are correctly tightened according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Bedding in creates a regular transfer layer between pads and disc. In a clear area, perform a series of progressive brakes from moderate speed, without locking the wheel or holding the brake lever engaged at a standstill after a sharp deceleration. About 15 to 20 braking cycles are often enough to stabilize contact. During this phase, braking may feel less powerful: this is normal.

To maintain a reliable system, replace pads in pairs on the same caliper and monitor both brakes. On a dual-braking scooter, the front brake provides a large part of the stopping power, while the rear stabilizes the trajectory. Maintaining them together helps ensure predictable handling.
