  • Categories:

    • < 25 km/h (pedelec): no registration, helmet recommended.

    • 25–45 km/h (s-pedelec): helmet mandatory, yellow plate, liability insurance, M or G license.

  • Minimum age:

    • 14 years with M license,

    • 16 years without license.

  • Mandatory equipment: lights, reflectors, front/rear brake, bell.

  • Cycle paths: allowed.

🇪🇺 In Europe

  • < 25 km/h / 250W max: classified as regular bicycles → no license or registration.

  • > 25 km/h or > 250W: considered mopeds → approval, insurance, and registration required.

  • Helmet: often recommended, sometimes mandatory depending on the country.

  • Usage: prohibited on sidewalks, cycle paths encouraged.

🛴 ELECTRIC SCOOTERS

🇨🇭 In Switzerland

  • Max speed: 20 km/h (limited to 25 km/h with pedaling assist).

  • Max power: 500W.

  • Minimum age:

    • 14 years with M license,

    • 16 years without license.

  • Mandatory equipment: lighting, brakes, bell, suitable tires.

  • Sidewalks prohibited: circulation on road or cycle path only.

  • Helmet: not mandatory but highly recommended.

  • No harmonization: each country sets its own rules.

    • France: limit to 25 km/h, minimum age 12 years, helmet outside urban areas.
